UditVani, Jamshedpur : East Singhbhum Deputy Commissioner (DC) Karn Satyarthi conducted a comprehensive inspection of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Hospital (MGMMCH) on Wednesday, October 15, to assess healthcare facilities and address operational challenges.
During the visit, the DC observed that the hospital’s 30-bed emergency ward was overwhelmed, with patients being treated on stretchers and chairs due to a surge in cases of seasonal ailments such as viral fever, diarrhoea, and typhoid.
The emergency department has been receiving over 900 cases daily, leading to overcrowding and resource strain.
Central Pathology Lab to Be Established
In response to the growing demand for diagnostic services, the DC announced plans to establish a central pathology laboratory within the hospital complex.
This initiative aims to streamline diagnostic processes and reduce turnaround times for test results, enhancing patient care efficiency.
Infrastructure Enhancements Underway
The DC’s inspection also highlighted ongoing efforts to improve hospital infrastructure. Key initiatives include the installation of an X-ray machine, relocation of the PSA oxygen plant and Liquid Medical Oxygen (LMO) unit from the old Sakchi building, and the operationalization of the dialysis center within the next 15 days.
Additionally, measures to enhance staff accountability and professionalism, such as implementing biometric attendance, enforcing dress codes, and mandating identity cards for outsourced staff, have been directed.
Relocation to New Facility
MGMMCH is in the final stages of relocating to its new 851-bed facility in Dimna, a move prompted by safety concerns following a structural collapse at the old Sakchi campus in May.
The new facility, which houses 12 departments, is expected to alleviate some of the current capacity issues and provide a safer environment for patients and staff.
The Deputy Commissioner emphasized the need for integrated, efficient functioning and instructed immediate action to address the hospital’s challenges.
The establishment of the central pathology lab and other infrastructure enhancements are expected to significantly improve patient care and hospital operations.
