
UditVani, Jamshedpur : National Metallurgical Laboratory (NML), a leading CSIR laboratory at Burmamines in Jamshedpur, hosted an enriching laboratory visit on Friday for 59 students and three teachers from Holy Cross School, Patel Bagan.
Organised under the CSIR–Jigyasa Virtual Laboratory Programme, the initiative aimed to ignite scientific curiosity among young learners and offer them firsthand exposure to advanced research and innovation.
The visit began with an inaugural session featuring a welcome address by Dr. Sandip Ghosh Chowdhury, Director, CSIR-NML, who highlighted the laboratory’s significant contributions to national development over its 75 years of excellence.
This was followed by Dr. Sarmishtha Sagar, Chief Scientist & Head, IMDC, who spoke about CSIR-NML’s pivotal role in R&D and its impact across scientific domains.
Dr. Animesh Jana, Senior Scientist, IMDC, then elaborated on the vision and objectives of the Jigyasa Programme, emphasizing its mission to strengthen student–scientist interaction and nurture scientific thinking among school students.
Participants were taken on guided tours of key research facilities, including the Applied and Analytical Chemistry Division, Creep Testing Laboratory, Non-Destructive Testing of Metals, E-Waste Recycling Unit, and various DIY scientific kit demonstrations, giving them valuable insights into real-world scientific practices.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks, followed by group photographs.
Students and teachers expressed great satisfaction with the visit, describing it as an inspiring and eye-opening experience that deepened their understanding of scientific research and technological innovation.
