UditVani, Jamshedpur : A 64-year-old retired postal department employee, Vijay Lakra, committed suicide by jumping into a government well near his residence in Birsanagar.
The incident came to light on Monday morning when local residents spotted a body floating in the well and immediately informed the Birsanagar police.
The police reached the spot, retrieved the body, conducted an inquest and sent it for post-mortem before handing it over to the family.
According to family members, Lakra had retired from the Postal Department and had been suffering from mental health issues for several months.
They said he had been under severe stress for days and often behaved abnormally.
On Saturday evening, he left home and did not return, prompting the family to search for him through the night.
It was only on Monday morning, after locals found the body in the well, that his identity was confirmed.
Police said the preliminary investigation did not reveal any signs of foul play, injury or dispute.
The Birsanagar police station in-charge stated that an Unnatural Death (UD) case has been registered based on the statement of Lakra’s son.
Given the family’s account of his deteriorating mental condition, police suspect that he may have taken the extreme step due to psychological distress.
The exact cause of death will be confirmed after the post-mortem report.
The incident has left the neighbourhood in shock. Locals remembered Vijay Lakra as a calm and friendly person who had been visibly troubled in recent months due to his illness.
