Uditvani, Jamshedpur: Cybercriminals in the city are adopting increasingly deceptive methods to defraud unsuspecting citizens.
In the latest incidents reported from Birsanagar and Vijaya Garden, two individuals were duped of a total of Rs 4.20 lakh.
Case 1: Courier Scam via Fake Customer Care Number
Rajesh Kumar Sharma, a resident of Birsanagar, fell victim to a scam after he failed to receive a courier booked through Anjani Courier.
He searched for the company’s contact number on Google and dialed it to inquire.
Shortly after, he received a call from the same number. The caller identified himself as an employee of the courier company and promised to register his complaint.
The fraudster then sent Rajesh a link, claiming that a nominal payment of Rs 5 was needed to process the complaint. As Rajesh began the payment process, the scammer managed to obtain his UPI credentials through the link and siphoned off Rs 2 lakh from his bank account.
Case 2: Investment Scam via WhatsApp Message
In another incident, Abhishek Kumar from Vijaya Garden received a message on WhatsApp promoting an investment opportunity in a company named DCX.
The message offered the chance to earn profits by purchasing digital coins. Trusting the offer, Abhishek proceeded with the investment steps, only to discover that Rs 2.20 lakh had been withdrawn from his account shortly after.
When he tried to contact the number again, it was found to be switched off. He promptly filed a complaint with the Cyber Police Station.
Cyber Police Initiate Investigation
The cyber police have begun investigating both cases and urged the public to exercise caution.
Officials have advised against calling unverified numbers found on Google and warned people not to click on unfamiliar links or share sensitive financial information online.
