UditVani, Jamshedpur : In a significant breakthrough, Jamshedpur police have arrested Chandan Kumar Mandal — the alleged mastermind behind the sensational ₹30 lakh robbery that took place near Gurudwara Road under Bistupur police station limits on September 4.
Mandal was apprehended from Dhapri Shampur in Bihar’s Munger district.
Police identified Mandal, also known as Saurabh or Chandu, as the prime accused who snatched a bag containing cash from businessman Saket Agarwal. Following the heist, he and his associates fled in an Innova car to Rammadhia Basti in Adityapur, where they briefly stopped before escaping towards Rajnagar. Mandal later took his ₹5 lakh share of the loot and went into hiding in his ancestral village in Munger.
Bistupur police intensified their investigation immediately after the incident, employing a combination of human intelligence and technical surveillance to trace the fugitive. Their persistent efforts paid off when Mandal was finally tracked down and arrested in Munger. At the time of his arrest, officers recovered ₹50,000 in cash from his possession.
Earlier, on September 12, police had arrested four other members of the gang involved in the robbery. Interrogation of those suspects helped investigators piece together the entire conspiracy, ultimately leading to Mandal’s capture.
According to police officials, Mandal was the most active member of the gang and the key strategist behind the operation. During questioning, he admitted to receiving ₹5 lakh as his share of the stolen money, a portion of which he had already spent.
Station in-charge Alok Kumar Dubey said the investigation has now reached its final stage, and the process of filing the chargesheet in court has begun. With Mandal’s arrest, police expect to recover the remaining stolen cash soon.
The capture of the mastermind marks a major success for the Jamshedpur police in solving this high-profile case, bringing the entire chain of the robbery to light.
