UditVani, Jamshedpur: Tata Steel, a pioneer in workplace childcare in India, continues to lead the way with one of the most comprehensive childcare ecosystems in corporate India.
The company was the first in the nation to establish a workplace crèche and today operates over 20 creches across its plants, mining locations, offices, and townships — including Jamshedpur, Kolkata, West Bokaro, Noamundi, Joda, Kharagpur, Tarapur, Haldia, Bamnipal, Jajpur, and Meramandali.
Hundreds of children are enrolled across these centres at any given time. The Muskaan Creche in Jamshedpur runs near full capacity, while crèches at Noamundi, Joda, and other locations also record steady utilisation.

Even smaller sites such as Tarapur and CRM Bara maintain active crèches to ensure that working parents have reliable childcare support wherever they are posted.
Each facility is designed as per Tata Steel’s Creche Policy, featuring child-friendly infrastructure, CCTV monitoring, medical care, nutritious meals, and structured learning activities.
The staffing model maintains a high standard of care — with one helper for every five children under three years and one for every eight children aged three to six — supervised by trained attendants.
All creches are also connected with local hospitals for immediate medical assistance, ensuring a safe and nurturing environment for children.
The initiative is inclusive in scope, extending benefits to all employees regardless of gender or marital status, for children aged six months to six years. Tata Steel not only offers on-site and near-site childcare but also reimburses crèche expenses and provides nursing breaks and flexible access to support employees’ parenting needs.
Significantly, the crèches are designed to support women employees working in all three shifts. Several centres have already begun operating round the clock, while others are fully equipped to do so, reinforcing Tata Steel’s commitment to enabling women’s participation across every sphere of work.
Beyond childcare, the crèches — especially Muskaan at Tata Steel Jamshedpur — also focus on the holistic development of children through activities such as tuitions, art, dance, and creative learning.
Through dependable and inclusive childcare support, Tata Steel continues to promote women’s empowerment, workforce diversity, and a balanced, equitable workplace across all its operational sites.
