Uditvani: With the recent buzz around Ratan Tata’s will, another wave of interest has stirred — this time surrounding his stunning sea-facing bungalow, Halekai, in Mumbai’s upscale Colaba area.
Known for its elegance and historic charm, the bungalow may soon become home to Tata Trusts’ new chairman and Ratan Tata’s stepbrother, Noel Tata.
A New Chapter at Halekai
After stepping down from Tata Sons in 2012, Ratan Tata made Halekai his residence, where he lived peacefully with his loyal German Shepherd and close-knit staff while continuing his philanthropic work with the Tata Trusts.
Ratan Tata, who studied architecture at Cornell University and briefly worked as an architect before joining the Tata Group in 1962, designed his Colaba bungalow, Halekai, with the assistance of architect Ratan Batliboi.
Now, with the industrialist’s passing away in October 2024 and Noel Tata stepping into his shoes at Tata Trusts, reports suggest that Noel may soon relocate from his current residence in Cuffe Parade’s Windmere to Halekai.
Legacy and Luxury on the Seafront
Spread in around 13,350 square feet area, the four-storey Halekai is not just a home but a symbol of legacy.
It’s owned by Ewart Investments, a Tata Sons subsidiary. Since Ratan Tata’s passing away , the bungalow has remained unoccupied — but not for long, if the reports hold true.
Noel Tata, a key figure in the Tata Group, holds top roles across major Tata companies and owns a significant stake in Tata Sons.
As he potentially moves into Halekai, it marks not just a change of address, but the continuation of a legacy tied deeply to one of India’s most respected business families.
Notably, following the conclusion of the Chhamsi prayer ceremony—a Zoroastrian ritual performed six months after a person’s passing—on Sunday, sources suggest that Noel Tata, who was in Dubai for the Tata Group’s annual leadership conclave over the weekend, may now be open to the idea of moving into the residence.
Rather than allowing the bungalow to remain vacant—as it has since Ratan Tata’s passing in October 2024—sources believe it would be more fitting for the home to be occupied once again.
