UditVani, New Delhi : Celebrities from the cine world across India are set to walk the Red Carpet as part of Indian delegation on the opening day of the 75th Cannes Film Festival on 17th May, 2022.
This year, the intent is to showcase the rich flavour and diversity of India – culture, heritage, legacy, and developments through its cinema. Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Anurag Thakur will lead the delegation from India to Cannes. The list of celebrities comprises of stars from major music industries across India. The Indian contingent to the festival, billed as one of the most prestigious film galas across the globe will comprise the following celebrities:
1. Akshay Kumar
2. A. R. Rahman
3. Nawazuddin Siddiqui
4. Nayanthara
5. Pooja Hegde
6. Prasoon Joshi (Chairman, CBFC)
7. R. Madhavan, {World Premier of Rocketry at Cannes on May 19}
8. Shekhar Kapur
9. Tamannaah Bhatia
10. Vani Tripathi
11. Mame Khan (Folk Music Composer, Singer)
12. Ricky Kej (Music Composer)
The delegation has been hand-picked from across the length and breadth of the country to represent different strengths and aspects of the country.
Notably India is the Official Country of Honour at Cannes Film Market (Marché du Film) in this edition of the festival. Cannes Film Market is held on the sidelines of the Cannes Film Festival, which begins May 17.
This is the first time this honour has been bestowed on any country and comes at a time when India celebrates its Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav. India and France are also celebrating 75 years of diplomatic relations this year. India is also the “Country of Honour at the Cannes Next, under which 5 new Start Ups would be given an opportunity to pitch to the Audio-Visual Industry.
On the other hand, Deepika Padukone is part of the eight-member competition jury of the Film Festival along with actor-filmmaker Rebecca Hall and Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi.
Delhi-based filmmaker Shaunak Sen’s documentary ‘All That Breathes’ will be India’s sole cinematic representation at the main festival’.
India will also showcase five films at the ‘Goes to Cannes Section’. These movies include ‘Bailadila’ (Hindi, Chhattisgarhi) by Shailendra Sahu, ‘Ek Jagah Apni’ (Hindi) by Ektara Collective, ‘Follower’ (Marathi, Kannada, Hindi) by Harshad Nalawade; ‘Baghjan’ (Assamese,Moran) by Jaicheng Zxai Dohutia, and ‘Shivamma’ (Kannada) by Jai Shankar.
At the movie gala, a brand-new restoration of Satyajit Ray’s movie ‘Pratidwandi’ will be presented in an exclusive screening. This film has been restored under the National Film Heritage Mission.
Several initiatives such as collaboration with OTT platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime etc were undertaken by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting recently during the 52nd International Film Festival of India (IFFI).
