The post has remained vacant for nearly a year, prompting the revival of the appointment process.

Following the removal of former Technical Director Manoj Kumar, the position has been lying unoccupied.

At present, the additional charge is being held by Chairman and Managing Director Dr. Kanchan Anand Rao.

The prolonged vacancy has reportedly impacted key technical and operational functions within the organization.

Among the prominent contenders are Chanchal Manna, Unit Head of Turamdih Mines; Suman Sarkar, Unit Head of the Tummalapalle Uranium Project; R.K. Mishra, Civil Head; and Manoj Kumar, who has reapplied despite his earlier tenure.

Sources suggest that Chanchal Manna is currently seen as a frontrunner, having previously appeared for interviews for the same post.

The position has attracted widespread interest beyond UCIL as well. As per eligibility norms, candidates from other public sector enterprises with at least two years of experience at the General Manager level are also eligible to apply. Consequently, dozens of applications have been submitted to the Public Enterprises Selection Board in New Delhi.

Manoj Kumar’s candidature, however, remains under scrutiny. Questions have been raised regarding his previous tenure, including allegations of administrative inaction and his role in a controversy linked to a complaint involving former CMD Dr. Santosh Satpathy.

Reports indicate that these aspects are still under review by the Department of Atomic Energy.
Sources indicate that Kumar may face pointed questions during the interview process, including the circumstances surrounding his removal, his involvement in past controversies, and his continued use of official residence and office facilities after being relieved from the post.

The selection panel now faces the challenge of balancing experience, credibility, and organizational needs while arriving at a consensus candidate.

Besides Manna, Sarkar, and Mishra are also being viewed as strong contenders.

The final decision is expected to take a few months. Meanwhile, employees across UCIL are closely watching the proceedings, as the appointment to this key leadership role is likely to shape the company’s future direction.
