Udit Vani, Jamshedpur: A new chapter in medical education and healthcare unfolded in Jharkhand on Monday as Manipal Tata Medical College (MTMC), Jamshedpur, celebrated its first-ever graduation ceremony, marking the successful completion of studies by its inaugural batch of MBBS students.

The convocation, held at the Baridih campus as part of the 33rd Convocation of the Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), witnessed 133 young doctors receiving their medical degrees, a milestone that reflects the growing success of one of India’s most distinctive private-sector collaborations in higher medical education.

Jharkhand Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar, who attended as the chief guest, described the occasion as a defining moment not only for the graduates but also for the future of healthcare in the state.

Addressing the newly qualified doctors, he emphasized that medicine is a vocation rooted in service, compassion and responsibility.

“Technology may continue to reshape healthcare, but empathy and human connection will always remain at the heart of medical practice,” the Governor said, urging graduates to uphold the highest standards of ethics and patient care throughout their careers.

The ceremony brought together an impressive gathering of dignitaries, including K. Vijay Kumar, Senior Security Advisor to the Ministry of Home Affairs; D.B. Sundara Ramam, Vice President (Corporate Services), Tata Steel; Shri Somnath Das, Group President – Special Projects and Officer on Special Duty to MAHE; Brigadier (Dr.) H.S. Bandhu, Dean of MTMC; senior officials from MAHE and Tata Steel, distinguished academicians, faculty members and proud family members of the graduating students.

Joining the event virtually, Jharkhand Health Minister Irfan Ansari reminded the graduates that the role of a doctor extends far beyond diagnosis and treatment.

He called upon them to become advocates for their patients and trusted companions during life’s most challenging moments.

Dr. Sharath K. Rao, Vice Chancellor of MAHE, who formally conferred the degrees, lauded the graduating batch for their perseverance and dedication.

He noted that MTMC has rapidly established itself as a centre of excellence in medical education, research and innovation.
“Our first graduating class leaves with the knowledge, skills and values needed to excel in a rapidly changing healthcare environment. We are confident they will make meaningful contributions to society and the medical profession,” he said.

Vijay Kumar encouraged the graduates to embrace lifelong learning and highlighted the importance of teamwork in modern healthcare, stressing that effective patient care depends on close collaboration among doctors, nurses, paramedics and healthcare workers.

Speaking on the significance of the institution, Somnath Das said the graduation of the inaugural batch validates the vision behind the unique MAHE–Tata Steel partnership and demonstrates how collaborative efforts can strengthen healthcare delivery and medical education in the region.
Shri D.B. Sundara Ramam reiterated Tata Steel’s commitment to community development through investments in education and healthcare, describing MTMC as an institution that will continue to create lasting social impact for generations to come.

Established in 2020 through a pioneering partnership between MAHE and Tata Steel, MTMC was envisioned as a model institution dedicated to producing skilled and compassionate healthcare professionals.

The graduation of its first batch represents a historic achievement for the college and reinforces its growing role in shaping the future of healthcare across Jharkhand and eastern India.
