UditVani, Jamshedpur: Jharkhand is likely to witness widespread thunderstorm activity accompanied by lightning and strong surface winds over the coming days as multiple weather systems remain active over eastern and central India, the Meteorological Centre said on Thursday.

The weather office has forecast thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 50-60 Kmph at isolated places across the state on May 27 and 28. However, northwestern parts of Jharkhand are expected to remain relatively less affected during this period.

From May 29 to 30, thunderstorm activity with gusty winds of 40-50 Kmph is likely mainly over the northwestern districts of the state. Similar weather conditions are expected to prevail again across Jharkhand between May 31 and June 2.

Meteorologists said the unstable weather conditions are being triggered by an active trough system extending from northwest Uttar Pradesh to south coastal Odisha. The trough passes through cyclonic circulations over central Uttar Pradesh, northeast Madhya Pradesh and northwest Odisha at about 0.9 Km above mean sea level.

Another north-south trough extending from north Bihar to south Telangana via Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh at 1.5 Km above mean sea level is also contributing to enhanced moisture flow and atmospheric instability over the region. The Meteorological Centre has advised residents to remain cautious during thunderstorm activity and avoid open areas, tall trees and electric poles during lightning strikes.

UditVani, Jamshedpur: Jharkhand is bracing for an extended spell of turbulent weather, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting widespread thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds across the state over the coming days.

Wind speeds are expected to touch 60 Kmph in several districts, prompting authorities to urge residents to remain cautious.

According to the latest weather bulletin, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and winds of 40–50 Kmph are likely at isolated places across most parts of Jharkhand on May 11, except in the north-western region.

The intensity is expected to increase on May 12, with southern and central districts likely to witness stronger gusts of 50–60 Kmph, while other parts of the state may continue to experience winds ranging between 40–50 Kmph.

The weather system is expected to intensify further on May 13 and 14, with districts such as Ranchi, Ramgarh, Bokaro, Dhanbad, Gumla and Khunti likely to bear the brunt of the storm activity.

Adjoining north-eastern districts including Dumka, Deoghar and Jamtara are also expected to witness thunderstorms and lightning.

Meanwhile, Sahebganj, Pakur, Godda, Giridih, Hazaribagh, Koderma and Lohardaga may experience moderate thunderstorm activity with gusty winds.

Adding to the significance of the current weather pattern, Jharkhand has already received substantial rainfall between March and May this year, bringing much-needed relief from early summer heat and improving moisture conditions across the state.

However, meteorologists at Alipore Regional Centre warn that the persistent rain and storm activity could also trigger localised disruptions, including power outages, tree falls and traffic interruptions.

Experts attribute the unstable weather to multiple active atmospheric systems, including an upper air cyclonic circulation over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and adjoining regions, along with troughs stretching across central and eastern India, creating favourable conditions for repeated thunderstorm development.

Residents have been advised to avoid open spaces during lightning strikes, secure loose outdoor objects and remain alert to sudden weather changes.

“The sudden thunderstorms and powerful winds have become a daily concern. We are keeping windows secured and avoiding stepping out unless necessary, especially during the afternoon when the weather changes so quickly,” said Ananya Sen, a resident of Sonari in Jamshedpur.

UditVani, Jamshedpur : A relentless heatwave continues to sweep across Jharkhand, pushing temperatures to alarming levels and leaving residents struggling under oppressive conditions.

Even nights have turned unusually warm, offering little respite from the daytime heat.

Daltonganj emerged as the hottest location in past 24-hours , recording a blistering 44.8°C. Chaibasa followed at 43.4°C, while Jamshedpur sizzled at 41.5°C. Bokaro and Ranchi also remained above the 40°C mark, highlighting the widespread intensity of the heatwave.

Rainfall activity has been nearly absent, with only Bokaro receiving light showers.

Clear skies and dry weather have further intensified solar heating, worsening conditions across both urban and rural areas.

“The prevailing dry conditions and clear skies are sustaining the heatwave across the state, with temperatures consistently above normal,” an India Meteorological Department (IMD) official said.

The IMD has forecast thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds (50–60 kmph) in several districts, including Ranchi, Bokaro, Gumla, Hazaribagh, Khunti, Ramgarh, East and West Singhbhum, Simdega, Saraikela-Kharsawan, Koderma, Lohardaga, Dhanbad, Giridih and Jamtara on April 28.

On April 29, similar conditions are likely across other parts of Jharkhand with wind speeds of 40–50 kmph.

By April 30, the weather may turn more intense, with the possibility of hailstorms in districts such as Chatra, Hazaribagh, Koderma, Godda, Sahibganj, Pakur, Dumka, Deoghar, Jamtara, Giridih, Dhanbad, Bokaro, Ramgarh and Ranchi.

“People should remain cautious during thunderstorm activity, particularly due to lightning and sudden high winds,” the official added.

While the incoming weather system may bring temporary relief, authorities have advised residents to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, and remain alert as Jharkhand transitions from extreme heat to potentially volatile weather conditions.

UditVani, Jamshedpur : The latest assessment by the India Meteorological Department from its Ranchi centre indicates a steady warming trend across Jharkhand, with dry weather dominating most regions and no rainfall recorded in the past 24 hours.

Day temperatures have climbed significantly, with Jamshedpur emerging as the hottest at 39.6°C. Close behind were Chaibasa at 39.4°C and Daltonganj at 38.8°C, while Bokaro recorded 37.5°C.

The capital Ranchi remained relatively milder at 35.6°C. Night temperatures dipped notably in some pockets, with Gumla recording the lowest minimum at 14.4°C.

Visibility was 2000 metres in Jamshedpur during the observation period.

Weather conditions on April 15 are expected to remain clear and dry across the state, followed by partly cloudy skies on April 16 without any significant precipitation.

A marginal shift is likely on April 17, when isolated light rain may occur over northeastern districts, while other regions could witness cloud build-up accompanied by thunder and lightning activity.

The outlook suggests that southern parts of the state may receive light, scattered rainfall on April 18, providing brief respite from the heat.

However, dry and clear conditions are expected to return on April 19. Around April 17, isolated pockets may also experience heat wave conditions, particularly outside the northeastern and nearby central regions.

The evolving weather pattern is being influenced by a trough stretching from northeast Uttar Pradesh to Manipur via a cyclonic circulation over Bihar and adjoining regions, along with another north-south trough extending from Bihar to Tamil Nadu through Jharkhand and central India.

Overall, Jharkhand is heading into a phase of rising temperatures, with only short-lived relief expected from light rain and thunderstorm activity in the coming days.
