Amid the blistering conditions, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a statewide alert for thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds over the next four days.

Jamshedpur remained one of the hottest places in the state on Wednesday, with the mercury touching 43 degrees Celsius, triggering heatwave-like conditions and forcing residents to stay indoors during peak afternoon hours.

Daltonganj recorded the highest maximum temperature at around 45°C, while Chaibasa touched 43°C.

Ranchi recorded a relatively lower maximum of 39°C, with Namkum registering the state’s lowest minimum temperature at 22.2°C.
While most parts of the state remained dry, scattered rainfall was reported from a few pockets.

“The heat has become unbearable over the last few days. Even stepping out for basic errands in the afternoon feels exhausting. We are avoiding outdoor activities as much as possible,” said Ananya Sinha, a resident of Sonari.

In Bistupur, residents echoed similar concerns. “The roads are nearly empty in the afternoon, and even evenings are unusually warm. We are constantly hydrating and staying indoors whenever possible,” said Rajesh Agarwal, a local resident of Bistupur.

According to the IMD forecast, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds (40–50 kmph) are likely at isolated places across most parts of Jharkhand from May 21 to May 24, excluding portions of the north-western belt.

On May 22, stronger gusts of 50–60 kmph are expected over the north-eastern and adjoining central districts, including Dhanbad and Bokaro, while isolated heatwave conditions may persist in the north-western parts of the state, excluding Latehar.

Similar weather conditions are expected to continue on May 23 and 24, with intensified wind activity forecast for Dhanbad, Bokaro, Giridih, Koderma, Hazaribagh and Ramgarh.

The Meteorological Department has advised residents to avoid exposure to direct sunlight during afternoon hours, stay hydrated, and remain indoors during thunderstorm activity to minimise health and safety risks amid the dual threat of extreme heat and unstable weather.

Other districts also witnessed severe heat, with Chaibasa recording 40.4°C, Dumka 39.8°C, and Bokaro 39.1°C.

Although the state capital Ranchi remained relatively cooler at 36.2°C, humidity levels and rising minimum temperatures have intensified discomfort.

In Jamshedpur, the night temperature settled at 29.6°C—4.2 degrees above normal, indicating little relief even after sunset.

The combination of high heat and moisture-laden air has pushed the Discomfort Index close to 45°C in many parts of the state, making conditions feel significantly hotter than the actual temperatures.

Residents across Jamshedpur, Ranchi, Dhanbad, Bokaro, Deoghar, Hazaribagh, and Daltonganj are facing oppressive heat stress, with health experts warning of dehydration, fatigue, and other heat-related illnesses.

Despite the relentless heat, meteorologists have forecast a changing weather pattern, with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds expected to bring temporary relief across several districts. Southern and central Jharkhand—including Ranchi, Khunti, Gumla, East and West Singhbhum, and Saraikela-Kharsawan—are likely to experience strong thunderstorms accompanied by winds reaching 50 to 60 Kmph.

The Kolhan belt, particularly Jamshedpur and adjoining areas, may witness sudden cloud build-up and heightened humidity before showers provide short-lived cooling. Meanwhile, Bokaro, Dhanbad, Ramgarh, and Lohardaga are expected to receive isolated thunderstorms with winds of 40 to 50 kmph.

The IMD has indicated that thunderstorm activity may continue across much of Jharkhand until May 24, though parts of north-western Jharkhand, including Palamu, Garhwa, and Latehar, are likely to remain under the grip of dry and persistent heat.

As the state navigates this volatile pre-monsoon phase, residents have been urged to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, and remain alert for lightning and weather advisories.

रांची स्थित मौसम विज्ञान केंद्र (IMD) द्वारा जारी की गई वास्तविक मौसम रिपोर्ट के अनुसार, रविवार को स्टील सिटी जमशेदपुर में अधिकतम तापमान 39.6°C दर्ज किया गया, जो सामान्य से 1.1 डिग्री अधिक था। वहीं, न्यूनतम तापमान 29.6°C रहा, जो सामान्य से 4.2 डिग्री काफी अधिक था, जिससे शहर में असहज करने वाली उमस भरी स्थिति बनी रही। डालटनगंज 41°C तापमान के साथ राज्य का सबसे गर्म स्थान रहा, जबकि रांची में तुलनात्मक रूप से कम 35°C तापमान दर्ज किया गया।

18 मई: उत्तर-पश्चिमी हिस्सों को छोड़कर राज्यभर में अलर्ट

मौसम विभाग ने चेतावनी दी है कि आज, 18 मई को उत्तर-पश्चिमी हिस्सों को छोड़कर झारखंड के अलग-अलग स्थानों पर आंधी-तूफान, बिजली चमकने और 40-50 किमी प्रति घंटे की रफ्तार से तेज हवाएं चलने की संभावना है।

19 मई: धनबाद और गिरीडीह समेत कई जिलों में बढ़ेगी हवा की रफ्तार

19 मई को इस मौसम की तीव्रता बढ़ने की उम्मीद है। उत्तर-पूर्वी और उससे सटे मध्य जिलों, विशेष रूप से धनबाद और गिरीडीह में 50-60 किमी प्रति घंटे की रफ्तार से तेज हवाएं चल सकती हैं। वहीं, शेष मध्य और दक्षिणी झारखंड में आंधी-तूफान की गतिविधियों के साथ 40-50 किमी प्रति घंटे की रफ्तार से हवाएं चलने की संभावना है।

20 मई: हजारीबाग, कोडरमा, रामगढ़ और पूर्वी सिंहभूम में भारी आंधी की चेतावनी

20 मई को भी यह अलर्ट जारी रहेगा। इस दिन हजारीबाग, कोडरमा, रामगढ़ और जमशेदपुर सहित पूर्वी सिंहभूम में 50-60 किमी प्रति घंटे की रफ्तार से तेज हवाएं चलने की संभावना है, जिससे संभावित नुकसान और मौसम से जुड़ी घटनाओं की चिंता बढ़ गई है।

Jamshedpur saw an even sharper drop, with the day temperature at 32.0°C—7.3 degrees below the seasonal average—accompanied by 19.2 mm rainfall in the past 24 hours. Daltonganj remained the hottest at 35.0°C, while Lohardaga recorded the lowest minimum at 18.5°C.

Rainfall activity was fairly widespread, with Manihari in West Singhbhum receiving the highest precipitation at 41.2 mm, followed by Seraikela and Godda.

Even Ranchi recorded light showers, while several pockets including Baharagora, Darisai and Khunti experienced intermittent rain. Morning visibility in Jamshedpur dropped to 800 metres due to prevailing weather conditions, while Automated Weather Station data showed moderate temperatures across districts such as Bokaro and Gumla.

The IMD has indicated that thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph are likely at isolated places across the state till May 5, with no major weather warning from May 6 onwards.

The prevailing atmospheric instability is expected to trigger brief spells of rain and strong winds in different regions.Residents welcomed the cooler conditions but remained wary of sudden storms. “The drop in temperature has brought relief, especially at night, but the sudden gusty winds are quite strong,” said Ramesh Kumar, a resident of Telco.

Another local, Sunita Devi, added, “Rain is good, but lightning and strong winds are a concern. We are being careful, especially during the evenings.” Authorities have advised people to stay alert during thunderstorms and avoid open areas during lightning activity as the unsettled weather continues over the next few days.

शनिवार तक स्थिति में सुधार के आसार कम हैं और अधिकतम तापमान 42 डिग्री के आसपास ही बना रहेगा। रविवार को गर्मी अपने चरम पर पहुंच सकती है, जहां पारा 43 डिग्री के आंकड़े को छू सकता है। बारिश की संभावनाओं पर नजर डालें तो अगले कुछ दिनों तक शहर में वर्षा के आसार बेहद कम हैं। सोमवार की बारिश के बाद मंगलवार और बुधवार को आसमान मुख्य रूप से साफ रहने और धूप खिली रहने की उम्मीद है।

हालांकि, स्थानीय कारकों के कारण आंशिक रूप से बादल छा सकते हैं, लेकिन भारी बारिश की कोई ठोस संभावना फिलहाल नजर नहीं आ रही है। नमी के स्तर में भी गिरावट आने की उम्मीद है, जिससे उमस भरी गर्मी लोगों को परेशान कर सकती है।

मौसम विभाग के अनुसार, इन जिलों में तापमान सामान्य से 4 से 6 डिग्री अधिक दर्ज किया जा रहा है। शुष्क हवाओं और तेज धूप के कारण दोपहर 11 बजे से शाम 4 बजे तक लू के थपेड़े लोगों को बेहाल कर रहे हैं। नमी के गिरते स्तर की वजह से शरीर में पानी की कमी और ‘सनस्ट्रोक’ (लू लगना) का खतरा बढ़ गया है।

आज गर्मी अपने चरम पर रह सकती है। कोल्हान के तीनों जिलों (पूर्वी सिंहभूम, पश्चिमी सिंहभूम और सरायकेला खरसावां) में आज ‘हीट वेव’ का कहर जारी रहेगा। पलामू, गढ़वा, चतरा, लातेहार के अलावा अब खूंटी और सिमडेगा भी भीषण गर्मी की चपेट में हैं।

Weather conditions on April 15 are expected to remain clear and dry across the state, followed by partly cloudy skies on April 16 without any significant precipitation.

A marginal shift is likely on April 17, when isolated light rain may occur over northeastern districts, while other regions could witness cloud build-up accompanied by thunder and lightning activity.

The outlook suggests that southern parts of the state may receive light, scattered rainfall on April 18, providing brief respite from the heat.

However, dry and clear conditions are expected to return on April 19. Around April 17, isolated pockets may also experience heat wave conditions, particularly outside the northeastern and nearby central regions.

The evolving weather pattern is being influenced by a trough stretching from northeast Uttar Pradesh to Manipur via a cyclonic circulation over Bihar and adjoining regions, along with another north-south trough extending from Bihar to Tamil Nadu through Jharkhand and central India.

Overall, Jharkhand is heading into a phase of rising temperatures, with only short-lived relief expected from light rain and thunderstorm activity in the coming days.
