The Ironman demands a rare blend of stamina, discipline, and mental resilience: a 3.8 km open-water swim, followed by 180 km of cycling, and capped off with a gruelling 42.2 km marathon — all to be completed within strict cut-off times.

For Afzal, crossing that finish line was not just a triumph of athleticism, but a testament to relentless perseverance.

His achievement arrives at a time when the triathlon community in India is steadily expanding.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently lauded participants of Ironman 70.3 Goa — a Half Ironman race — while urging more Indians to embrace the sport.

His encouragement amplified national interest in endurance events and inspired a new wave of first-time triathletes. Afzal’s accomplishment stands tall in this growing movement.

What makes his success even more extraordinary is the life he balanced while chasing it.

Based in London and working full-time as a trader at an investment bank, Afzal stitched together his training through early mornings, late evenings, and long weekend sessions.

Afzal’s mother, Razia Ahmed – formerly the zonal head of CII’s Jharkhand chapter — expressed profound pride in her son’s accomplishment.

Now based in Pune, and with a distinguished career that last saw her serve as Secretary General of the Chamber of Marathwada Industries and Agriculture in Aurangabad, she shared her elation:

“As a mother, I was incredibly proud when Afzal completed his Half Ironman last year — an impressive achievement in itself. Yet he pushed further, set his sights on a full Ironman, and achieved it. I am immensely delighted and grateful to God Almighty that he completed this extraordinary feat on his first attempt.”

Afzal’s father, Jawed Ahmed — Vice President of Tata Hitachi Ltd., later appointed Managing Director of Perkins India Ltd., Aurangabad — has long lived an active, sports-oriented life.

From his days at IIT BHU and later XLRI, to his corporate years, he passionately participated in inter-university and inter-company sporting events. His influence has clearly shaped Afzal’s athletic journey.

Now, with the family preparing to return to Jamshedpur for a new professional chapter, their story reflects both personal reinvention and a deep continuity of discipline, aspiration, and sporting spirit.

Organised by Yoska, the prestigious event — considered one of India’s toughest endurance challenges — demanded months of rigorous preparation, discipline, and mental resilience.

The triathlon pushed participants through 2 Km of open-sea swimming, 90 Km of cycling, and a 21 Km half-marathon run, all to be completed within the unforgiving 8 hour 30 minute cut-off window.

From Jamshedpur, five determined athletes took on the challenge — and all five crossed the finish line with pride.

Four of them trained under Coach Anirudh Ravichandran from Bangalore, undergoing six months of systematic and intense training across swimming, cycling, and running.

Two-time Ironman 70.3 finishers Dr. Neelam Jain (Radiologist) and Pratik Kauntia (Businessman) clocked an impressive 7 hours 8 minutes, reinforcing their consistency and growing command over the sport.

Dr. Piyush Jain (Orthopaedician) and Siddharth Adeshra (Businessman) completed the race in 7 hours 43 minutes, marking strong performances in their second outing.

Neha Chawla (Entrepreneur), battling food poisoning on race day, showcased exceptional grit by finishing in 8 hours 5 minutes, turning adversity into motivation.

Reflecting on the experience, Dr. Neelam Jain said:
“Such events test your grit and determination. They inculcate a strict discipline in your life that naturally spills over into everything you do. These races push your limits and make you realise you are far more capable than you think.”

मुख्यमंत्री ने कहा कि इस ऐतिहासिक प्रतियोगिता में छह देशों से पहुंची खेल प्रतिभाओं की मेजबानी करते हुए झारखंड गौरवान्वित है. उन्होंने कहा कि यह चैंपियनशिप केवल खेल का मंच नहीं, बल्कि दक्षिण एशियाई देशों के बीच एकता और भाईचारे का प्रतीक है. उन्होंने खिलाड़ियों से अपने सर्वोत्तम प्रदर्शन और खेल भावना बनाए रखने का आग्रह किया.

तीन दिन तक चलने वाली इस प्रतियोगिता में दक्षिण एशिया के छह देशों—भारत, बांग्लादेश, भूटान, नेपाल, मालदीव और श्रीलंका—के लगभग 300 एथलीट हिस्सा ले रहे हैं. भारत की टीम में 70 से अधिक खिलाड़ी शामिल हैं, जो 37 स्पर्धाओं में पदक की चुनौती पेश करेंगे. 26 अक्टूबर तक चलने वाली इस प्रतिस्पर्धा में 111 पदक दांव पर होंगे.

चैंपियनशिप के उद्घाटन के मौके पर 500 कलाकारों की टीम ने झारखंड की सांस्कृतिक विरासत और लोक परंपराओं पर आधारित शानदार कार्यक्रमों की प्रस्तुति दी. उद्घाटन समारोह में सभी छह देशों के एथलीटों ने स्टेडियम में शानदार मार्चपास्ट किया. टीम इंडिया के खिलाड़ी तिरंगा लिए गर्व के साथ आगे बढ़े. उनके आत्मविश्वास और जोश ने स्टेडियम में मौजूद दर्शकों का दिल जीत लिया.

उद्घाटन समारोह 24 अक्टूबर को शाम 6 बजे से मोरहाबादी स्थित बिरसा मुंडा फुटबॉल स्टेडियम में होगा. झारखंड में इस आयोजन को लेकर जबरदस्त उत्साह देखने को मिला है.

सैफ सीनियर एथलेटिक्स चैंपियनशिप में छह साउथ एशियन देश हिस्सा लेंगे, जिनमें भारत के अलावा बांग्लादेश, भूटान, नेपाल, मालदीव और श्रीलंका शामिल हैं. इन देशों के शीर्ष एथलीट रांची पहुंच चुके हैं.

संवाददाता सम्मलेन में झारखंड के खेलकूद एवं युवा कार्य विभाग के मंत्री सुदिव्य कुमार ने आयोजन को लेकर खुशी जताते हुए कहा, “करीब एक दशक के बाद झारखंड को किसी बड़े खेल के आयोजन की मेजबानी का मौका मिला है. इस चौथे सैफ सीनियर चैंपियनशिप में झारखंड को ख्याति मिले, भारतवर्ष को ख्याति मिले. ये दौरा यहां आने वाली विदेशी टीमों लिए यादगार हो. हमने इसी क्रम में प्रयास किया है, ताकि बेहतर आयोजन हो सके.”

उन्होंने कहा, “शुक्रवार से इसका शुभारंभ होगा. मुझे बहुत खुशी है कि खेलों के लिहाज से इस महाकुंभ में हमारे देश के पांच मशहूर खिलाड़ी यहां मौजूद हैं, जो निश्चित रूप से हमारे खिलाड़ियों को मोटिवेट करने का काम करेंगे. परमजीत सिंह, समरदीप, साक्षी, आनंद और अभिषेक राष्ट्रीय स्तर के एथलीट हैं, जिन्होंने देश का नाम रोशन किया है.”

इस प्रतियोगिता में कुल 205 एथलीट भाग ले रहे हैं. अधिकारियों को मिलाकर 291 सदस्यों का दल इसमें हिस्सा ले रहा है. कुल 37 इवेंट में पदकों के लिए शुक्रवार से जोर आजमाइश शुरू होगी. शुक्रवार शाम प्रतियोगिता का उद्घाटन मुख्यमंत्री हेमंत सोरेन करेंगे.

उन्होंने कहा कि आयोजन शानदार और सफल हो, ताकि खेल जगत में झारखंड की पहचान और मजबूत हो. इस मौके पर विभागीय सचिव मनोज कुमार, खेल निदेशक शेखर जमुआर और झारखंड ओलंपिक एसोसिएशन के महासचिव मधुकांत पाठक भी मौजूद रहे.

खेल निदेशक शेखर जमुआर ने बताया कि राज्य सरकार ने सभी इंतजाम अंतरराष्ट्रीय मानकों के अनुरूप किए हैं. खिलाड़ियों के ठहरने, अभ्यास और परिवहन की बेहतर व्यवस्था की गई है. चैम्पियनशिप के उद्घाटन और समापन दोनों मौकों पर भव्य सांस्कृतिक कार्यक्रम होंगे. उद्घाटन समारोह में लगभग 500 कलाकारों की टीम अपनी प्रस्तुति देगी. पूरे आयोजन का लाइव प्रसारण दूरदर्शन पर किया जाएगा, साथ ही यूट्यूब पर लाइव स्ट्रीमिंग की भी व्यवस्था होगी. इस प्रतियोगिता के दौरान रियल टाइम रिजल्ट और स्कोर अपडेट भी साझा किए जाएंगे.
