UditVani, New Delhi: The Union Health Ministry has announced that it is closely monitoring the recent spread of the HMP virus in China. To strengthen surveillance, the Ministry stated that the ICMR will increase the number of laboratories equipped to test for HMPV. Additionally, it assured continuous monitoring of HMPV trends throughout the year to ensure preparedness and timely response.
The Ministry held a Joint Monitoring Group meeting in New Delhi, chaired by Dr. Atul Goel, Director-General of Health Services, to discuss recent developments. Dr. Goel reassured the public that there is no cause for alarm in the current situation and encouraged everyone to follow general precautionary measures.
The Joint Monitoring Group noted that these viruses are already circulating globally, including in India. It highlighted that India has a robust surveillance system for Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) through the ICMR and IDSP networks. Data from these systems indicates no unusual surge in such cases. Additionally, the ICMR network conducts tests for other respiratory viruses, including adenovirus, RSV, and HMPV, with no significant increase observed in the tested samples.
