Uditvani, Jamshedpur: A tragic incident unfolded in the Burmamines police station area near Chuna Bhatta on Thursday evening when a 42-year-old woman, identified as Jyoti Devi, committed suicide by hanging herself. Her family rushed her to MGM Hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.
According to reports, the incident happened around 8.30 pm. Her husband, Uday Chandra Chaurasia, who runs a betel shop in Burmamines, said he had gone to Sakchi market around 4 pm to buy some items.
At around 6 pm, Jyoti Devi called him and expressed her wish to visit her aunt’s house.
Their son offered to drop her off, but she declined. Around 6:30 pm, she told the family she was going to sleep and locked herself in the room.
Meanwhile, the children were watching television. A little while later, the elder son stepped out to get milk for tea. During this time, the younger son discovered his mother hanging from the ceiling fan.
He immediately informed his father, who rushed back home and, with the help of neighbors, took her down and brought her to the hospital — but it was too late.
Family members revealed that Jyoti Devi had been struggling with mental health issues, though they believed her condition wasn’t serious enough to lead to such a step. Her body was sent for post-mortem on Friday and later handed over to the family.
Police are currently investigating the matter. The tragic incident has left the entire family and neighborhood in deep state of shock and mourning.
