UditVani, Jamshedpur: Tata Steel has once again been honored with the Gold Employer award by the India Workplace Equality Index (IWEI) 2024, marking its fourth consecutive year of recognition. This accolade is a testament to the company’s ongoing commitment to LGBT+ inclusion in the workplace.
Acknowledgment for Diversity and Inclusion
IWEI has recognized Tata Steel for its outstanding efforts in embedding diversity and inclusion throughout its policies, recruitment practices, and external communications. The company’s continuous work in promoting equality has solidified its position as a leader in fostering an inclusive workplace.
Comprehensive Efforts for LGBT+ Inclusion
Tata Steel’s journey towards becoming a truly inclusive workplace has been driven by significant changes in HR policies and organizational culture. The company has introduced several progressive employment practices, such as offering equal benefits for LGBT+ partners, which include not only medical coverage but also perks like a honeymoon package and gender transition support. Additionally, gender-neutral parental leave is now available to all employees, regardless of their gender identity.
Tata Steel has also invested in employee resource groups (ERGs), which provide a supportive network for LGBT+ employees. These initiatives are complemented by outreach programs and community partnerships aimed at promoting acceptance and understanding within the workplace.
Leadership’s Commitment to Inclusivity
Speaking about the achievement, Atrayee Sanyal, Vice President of Human Resource Management at Tata Steel, shared, “We are proud to be recognized as a Gold Employer for the fourth consecutive year. Our commitment goes beyond evolving policies; we have implemented mechanisms for sensitization, allyship, and continuous engagement to create a workplace where every individual can thrive. We firmly believe that diversity and inclusion are not just values, but essential drivers of innovation and business success.”
The Birth of MOSAIC and WINGS
Tata Steel’s Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) program began with the formation of the MOSAIC diversity group in June 2015. MOSAIC focuses on multiple pillars such as sensitization, recruitment, retention, and development of diverse groups, including LGBT+, Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), and other affirmative action groups.
In line with its vision of promoting a workplace for all, Tata Steel launched the WINGS LGBTQ+ employee resource group in May 2018. These initiatives have paved the way for a more inclusive and accepting workplace culture at Tata Steel.
What is IWEI?
The India Workplace Equality Index (IWEI) is India’s first comprehensive tool for employers to assess their progress on LGBT+ inclusion. This recognition reflects Tata Steel’s commitment to creating an environment where everyone, regardless of their identity, feels respected and valued.
