UditVani, Jamshedpur: The Dhalbhum Forest Division carried out a major operation against illegal wildlife trade on Sunday evening near Sakchi roundabout, leading to the rescue of more than 100 birds and the arrest of three accused.
Acting on a confidential tip-off about birds being brought from Kolkata for unlawful sale in Sakchi and nearby areas, the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau team set up surveillance and intercepted a suspect carrying a bag.
A search led to the recovery of 35 parrots, and the man was identified as Abhay Gupta.
Based on his interrogation, two more accused — MD Guddu and Sameer Ansari — were arrested. From them, officials seized 10 cockatiels, 35 large parakeets and a deer antler.
Divisional Forest Officer Saba Alam Ansari said initial findings confirmed that all the animals had been transported from Kolkata and were intended for sale in local markets and residential areas.
He stressed that such activities are a serious violation of the Wildlife Protection Act and pose a significant threat to biodiversity.
A case has been registered and further questioning is underway to uncover the full network behind the racket.
The rescued birds have been placed in safe custody, their health is being monitored, and they will be released into a suitable natural habitat after necessary checks.
