UditVani, Jamshedpur: Tata Steel’s Ferro Alloys and Minerals Division (FAMD) has successfully conducted the trial of its first-ever movement of Ferro Chrome in a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) truck for export from its Ferro Alloys Plant in Jajpur on Wednesday.
This initiative reinforces Tata Steel’s commitment to sustainability and reducing its carbon footprint in logistics and supply chain operations.
The pioneering step involves movement of Ferro Alloys in CNG trucks from FAP Jajpur to Vizag, reducing the CO2 by approximately 20-25 % compared to the High-Speed Diesel trucks.
This has been executed in collaboration with One Supply Chain and the procurement team of Tata Steel and M/s CJ Darcl team.
Amit Choubey, Chief, Logistics (FAMD) flagged off the consignment at the company’s Ferro Alloys Plant in presence of Alok Kumar Panda, Head, FAP Jajpur, Soumya Basu, Senior Area Manager, Logistics-FG (FAMD), Munmun Tah, Senior Area Manager, Procurement, Transportation (Raw Materials) and representatives of M/s CJ Darcl.
Speaking on the achievement, Pankaj Satija, Executive-In-charge, FAMD, said, “We are working towards cleaner fuel in our plant operation and we wanted to contribute in the supply chain also. This trial run underlines our commitment to reducing emissions across the value chain. The successful experiment of CNG trucks for Ferro Chrome exports is a testament to our continuous pursuit of greener and more efficient logistics solutions.”
As part of the company’s efforts to adopt environmentally friendly practices, Tata Steel – in the recent past – had conducted trial run of Electric Vehicle (EV) trucks at FAP Jajpur for movement of Ferro Chrome and Reductant for its shorter haul sectors.
The steel major also had launched multi-modal movement of Ferro alloys from its plants in Odisha through coastal route via Paradip port and Vizag port to cater to its customers in the western part of India.
The company has been exploring innovative and sustainable transportation solutions to enhance efficiency while minimizing environmental impact.
The trial of CNG trucks marks a crucial step in this direction and will help significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
