Jamshedpur : Tata Power, India’s largest integrated power company and a reliable electricity provider to 8 lakh consumers in Mumbai, has secured approval from the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) to install a 100 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in the city over the next two years.
This state-of-the-art BESS, featuring advanced ‘black start’ capabilities, will ensure rapid restoration of power to critical services such as the metro, hospitals, airport, and data centers during grid disturbances—significantly reducing the risk of widespread blackouts.
Designed to enhance the city’s power infrastructure, the system will optimize reactive power management, improve peak demand efficiency, and bolster Mumbai’s energy resilience.
Its high ramp-rate capability will facilitate smooth peak load management, delivering a stable power supply even during high-demand periods.
The BESS will also drive down energy costs by storing electricity during off-peak hours and supplying it during expensive peak periods—ultimately helping lower tariffs for consumers. Additionally, it will defer the need for large-scale infrastructure upgrades by efficiently managing load fluctuations.
Beyond reliability, the system will offer ancillary services such as frequency regulation and voltage support, and enable better integration of solar power by storing excess daytime energy for use during evening peaks. This aligns with Tata Power’s focus on increasing green energy use and meeting energy storage obligations.
The full 100 MW system will be distributed across 10 key sites near high-demand areas, all centrally managed by Tata Power’s Power System Control Center (PSCC). Future integration with the Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS) is also planned to further improve operational efficiency.
Maintaining a strong commitment to safety, Tata Power will implement triple-layer temperature monitoring and fire suppression systems at the cell, module, and rack levels.
The BESS is designed for high round-trip efficiency, low auxiliary consumption, and extended lifespan to support Mumbai’s sustainable energy future.
As renewable adoption accelerates, this initiative marks a crucial step in the transition to clean energy, with BESS providing a faster, more cost-effective alternative to conventional grid upgrades.
With this pioneering move, Tata Power continues to lead Mumbai toward a smarter, more sustainable energy landscape.
