Jamshedpur : In a significant development, the Supreme Court of India, while hearing the case Jawahar Lal Sharma vs State of Jharkhand and Others (W.P. (C) No. 483 of 2025), today issued a notice to the opposing parties and granted four weeks to file their responses.
The next hearing is scheduled for July.
The bench comprising Justice Surya Kant and Justice N. Kotiswar Singh reviewed the case concerning the disputed notification issued under Article 243 (Q)(1) and Section 481 of the Jharkhand Municipal Act, 2011.
The notification, dated 28.12.2023, had declared the Jamshedpur industrial township as an industrial town.
However, the Supreme Court has ordered a stay on the execution of this notification, effectively pausing any further steps toward its implementation.
The petitioner, Jawahar Lal Sharma, argued that the creation of a new Nagar Panchayat (municipality) in Jamshedpur was being bypassed through this notification.
The court’s interim order brings temporary relief to residents and activists opposing the industrial township tag, who believe it circumvents local governance and public accountability.
