UditVani,Jamshedpur : The forest department on Saturday morning busted an illegal marine coral trafficking operation inside Hotel Virat, located at Sakchi, in the heart of the city.
The surprise raid triggered a stir in the busy commercial hub as officers detained four suspects from the scene.
Two of the arrested have been identified as Hari Charan Gop and Pramod Cabarta, while the identities of the remaining accused are being kept confidential for investigative purposes.
The crackdown followed a confidential tip-off about a covert coral trade deal being finalized within the hotel. Acting swiftly, the enforcement team seized specimens of protected marine coral, now undergoing evaluation to determine their species, volume, and estimated black-market value.
Preliminary questioning has reportedly provided key leads that may help unearth a wider smuggling network. Officials suggest that the syndicate behind the supply and transport of corals could extend beyond state boundaries.
The incident exposes a troubling trend—urban commercial establishments being exploited as hideouts for wildlife crime. Illegal coral trade is not only a punishable offence under Indian wildlife conservation laws but also a direct assault on marine biodiversity, already under pressure worldwide.
Authorities have emphasized that the case will be pursued vigorously, with further operations expected to dismantle the network at its roots.
