Jamshedpur : In a major crackdown, the Jugsalai police in Jamshedpur arrested one person late Monday night for possessing illegal firearms, exposing a racket involved in arms smuggling and repair. The arrested accused has been identified as Mohammad Khalik (35), a resident of Darbhanga district in Bihar.
His two associates, Mohammad Samar and Mohammad Afroz, are currently on the run.
During the operation, police recovered a pistol, magazine, spring, bullet head, damaged bullet, a broken part of a cartridge extractor, two hammers, a toothbrush, wrench, file, and spoke from the accused. According to police, the gang used to smuggle illegal firearms from Munger (Bihar) and supply them in Jamshedpur and nearby districts. They were also involved in repairing weapons.
The operation was carried out under the guidance of senior police officials. A special raiding team, led by the Jugsalai police station in-charge, was formed and conducted the raid around 10:30 pm on May 20.
Khalik was caught in a suspicious condition carrying a yellow bag. During interrogation, he revealed the gang’s modus operandi and involvement in illegal arms trade.
A case has been registered against Khalik under the Arms Act, and he was sent to judicial custody on Wednesday. Police officials stated that if found guilty, he could face severe punishment.
The police have appealed to the public to surrender any illegal firearms at the nearest police station without delay. Strict action will be taken against anyone found in possession of unlicensed weapons.
