UditVani, Jamshedpur : In a major enforcement drive ahead of the municipal elections, police seized a large consignment of illicit foreign liquor during a raid in the Bagbera police station area on Friday.
Acting on specific intelligence inputs, a special team conducted a raid at Jatajhopri in Bagbera West, adjoining the Jugsalai Municipal Council area.
The operation was carried out at the residence of a local resident, Munmun Das, from where police recovered nine cartons and one small sack containing various brands of foreign liquor. In total, 80.280 litres of illegal liquor were seized.
Officials said the raid was part of a targeted campaign to curb the storage and distribution of illicit liquor during the election period.
To ensure the accused could be apprehended, a two-member plainclothes team was deployed at the location before the main raiding party arrived.
However, the house was found locked from the front, and taking advantage of alleged non-cooperation from some locals, the accused reportedly escaped through the rooftop before police could secure the premises.
The seized liquor has been confiscated and legal formalities completed.
A case has been registered against Munmun Das under Sections 47(a) and 55 of the Excise Act.
Police teams are conducting raids at suspected hideouts to trace and arrest the absconding accused.
