UditVani, Jamshedpur: Born on 10th July 1921 in the small town of Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh, DP Kharia emerged from humble beginnings. Growing up in a family of five brothers and one sister, his early life was marked by financial constraints and limited opportunities. However, his unwavering determination and focus propelled him towards a path of extraordinary achievements, inspiring countless individuals along the way.
Following the completion of his schooling, Kharia faced a difficult decision. With the burden of supporting a large family, his father could not afford to finance his college education. Encouraged to prioritize financial stability over personal aspirations, he was urged to abandon his studies and start working.
Even at a young age, DP Kharia displayed an exceptional level of dedication. Driven by an unyielding spirit, he prepared for one of the two coveted scholarships offered by the Government of Madhya Pradesh. Against all odds, he was selected, enabling him to pursue higher studies at the prestigious VJTI in Mumbai.
Double degrees in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering:
The true test of DP Kharia’s resilience had just begun. Within four years, he accomplished a rare feat by completing double degrees in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering.
Subsequently, he embarked on an apprenticeship at Tata Steel in Jamshedpur—a journey that would shape his career and leave an indelible mark on the industry. In this unfamiliar environment, surrounded by strangers, Kharia ventured forth, unaware of the impact he would have on the world.
As a diligent and quick-thinking engineer, Kharia approached each challenge as an opportunity for growth. He dedicated himself entirely to finding solutions, exhibiting remarkable problem-solving skills. His ability to make informed decisions swiftly and lead teams in overcoming adversity soon became his trademark. On one notable occasion, he proposed to the Tata Steel management that his team of Indian engineers take on the critical maintenance of the CRM, rather than relying on expensive experts from Germany.
Despite initial reluctance, the management granted approval after extensive debate. Over three consecutive days of tireless work, his team emerged triumphant. From that point on, the German experts were no longer called upon for CRM maintenance, resulting in significant cost savings for the company.
From an apprentice to Deputy Managing Director:
Kharia’s dedication and loyalty did not go unnoticed by his superiors. Despite the constraints of a time-bound promotion system, he earned an exceptional thirteen promotions during his tenure at Tata Steel, ascending from the position of an apprentice to that of Deputy Managing Director—a role created specifically for him. Even after retirement, he founded his own consultancy firm, nurturing and expanding numerous groups within the steel industry, including the erstwhile Usha Martin Limited. Engaged in active work until his last day at the age of 87, Shri Kharia epitomized the essence of a true Karmayogi—a tireless worker whose contributions to society were ceaseless.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Kharia dedicated himself to various organizations focused on nation-building and supporting the less fortunate. Revered for his integrity, loyalty, hard work, and compassion, he earned the respect of all who knew him. Countless individuals owe their successful careers to his guidance and mentorship.
On a personal level, Kharia led a life of simplicity and humility. He embraced the philosophy that life was akin to a war, where one must continuously prepare and fight for survival.
When diagnosed with diabetes at an early age, he confronted the illness head-on, rejecting the easy path of relying solely on medication. Instead, he transformed his lifestyle, incorporating yoga, regular walks, and healthy eating habits. His disciplined approach allowed him to combat the disease for over four decades, safeguarding his body from further harm. Kharia’s extraordinary determination and out-of-the-box thinking served as an inspiration to all who knew him.
