Preparation Tips for Students Appearing for Examinations from JAYANTHI SHESHADRI:
Chills! Panic attacks ! Sweaty palms and thumping hearts. This is what children normally associate with exams. However with proper , holistic preparation which involves the body, mind and soul, exams can be navigated peacefully and calmly.
The trick is to know how to prepare well. Children should first reflect what kind of learners they are , visual, auditory or kinesthetic and plan their study accordingly.
They need to prepare a timetable for studying. The schedule should not only include study but also have leisure activities. It is only then that the students will even make an attempt to follow the schedule.
- Once a schedule is in place students need to ensure there is a mix of subjects that need intense concentration ( for eg Maths or Physics) and relatively easy subjects ( like English or Hindi). The next step is to ensure they’re well versed with the syllabus.
- While the hours of study may vary from student to student, it is important for each child to ensure there is enough physical activity to supplement the long hours of study.
- Children need to study smart rather than study long hours. Sharpen your axe every now and then. Take breaks, rest, listen to music, chill with friends and then get back to studying.
- Solving of previous years question papers, referring to Pupil Performance Analysis are some tips to prepare for the exams.
- Quiz, peer teaching, writing of notes, mind maps, flow charts etc are various strategies to study. When doing sums in Maths it is very important to solve the sums within the stipulated time.
- Eating healthy and regular exercise are integral to good study habits. Eating oily food or junk food, staying up late nights, not getting adequate sleep are all detrimental to effective study.
- Also the study space should be neat and clean, comfortable and free of clutter ( especially free of cell phone! )
- On the day of the exam, children should wake up relaxed after a good night’s sleep. They need to only glance at their notes or key formula before they enter the exam hall. No last minute mugging up.
- Do not believe in rumors. Stay calm and relaxed. Pray to whichever God you believe in. Make the best use of the reading time. Answer the easy questions first. Keep looking at the clock to track your progress.
- Once you’re out of the exam hall, never discuss the question paper with your friends.
- Remember, this is just one of the many, many exams you will face in life. It is not a do or die situation. While you do need to do well in these exams, it is more important that you prepare yourself to face the real challenges that life will throw before you.
Wish you all the best. May each one of you come out with flying colors.
