Udit Vani, New Delhi: The Coal Ministry has reassured the nation that there is no cause for concern regarding the availability of coal for Thermal Power Plants (TPP). As of July 16, 2023, the coal stock at thermal power plants stands at a robust 33.46 million tonnes (MT), marking an impressive 28% increase compared to the same period last year. The overall coal availability, including pithead coal stock at the mines, in transit, and at TPPs, amounts to 103 MT, surpassing last year’s figures by 34% (76.85 MT).
The Coal Ministry has been closely collaborating with both Central Gencos and State Gencos, ensuring that there is absolutely no shortage of coal for the power sector. This reassurance comes amid concerns over power supply due to various factors impacting the energy industry.
Additionally, coal production during July 2023 has been notably higher compared to the previous year, with minimal disruption caused by the rains. The success in maintaining production levels during the monsoon season is attributed to meticulous mine-wise planning and the construction of cemented roads for uninterrupted coal evacuation from larger mines. Moreover, transportation from nine coal mines to railway sidings has been streamlined through mechanized coal handling plants, further bolstering production levels. Consequently, coal production from April 1 to July 16, 2023, has reached an impressive 258.57 MT, surpassing the 236.69 MT produced during the same period last year.
The power sector has also received an ample supply of coal, with 233 MT dispatched during this period compared to 224 MT in the previous year. Additionally, owing to substantial availability, coal companies have supplied significant quantities to the non-regulated sector.
It is important to note that while coal production has seen a remarkable growth of over 9%, thermal power generation has only grown by 2.04% this year.
Addressing concerns about railway rakes availability, the Ministry of Railways has ensured adequate rakes for all subsidiaries, ensuring an uninterrupted supply of coal stocks to thermal power plants. The Ministries of Coal, Railways, and Power are working closely in coordination to guarantee sufficient availability of coal for all Thermal Power Plants across the country.
Finally, the Coal Ministry has clarified that no power plant has been shut down due to coal unavailability. Any closures that have occurred must be attributed to factors other than coal supply.
In summary, with a considerable coal stockpile and collaborative efforts among key ministries, India’s Thermal Power Plants are well-equipped to continue their essential role in the nation’s power generation and energy security.
