UditVani, Jamshedpur: Jamshedpur FC head coach Owen Coyle believes the Men of Steel are just one step away from becoming serious title contenders, insisting the team now needs “that final bit of quality” after ending their campaign in fifth place with a goalless draw against Odisha FC.
Reflecting on the season, Coyle said the team’s biggest shortcoming was their inability to convert the numerous chances they created, despite consistently dominating games and pushing forward with intent.
“We had enough chances to score. Over the course of the season, we probably created more opportunities than most teams in the league, but we just lacked that final quality,” Coyle said.
The Scottish coach praised his side’s attacking style and ability to build play in dangerous areas but admitted that the final cross, decisive pass, and finishing touch often let them down.
“We get into the final third, we pass, we move, we attack—but the quality of the cross, the final ball, and the finishing are the areas we need to improve,” he added.
Coyle also hinted at significant squad adjustments ahead of next season, particularly in the attacking department.
Emphasising his preferred tactical setup, he reiterated the need for greater depth and competition among foreign strikers.
“My ideal squad always includes two foreign strikers. Injuries, fatigue, and the need for competition make that essential if you want to compete at the highest level,” he added.
Despite the disappointment of missing out on a stronger finish, Coyle highlighted several positives, especially the emergence of promising young talents such as Rosenberg, Puia, Nikhil Barla, and Sanan.
“There are plenty of very good pieces in this squad. The foundation is strong, and now it’s about adding that extra quality and bringing my own flavour to the team,” he said.
Coyle also expressed gratitude to the club’s passionate supporters, who turned out in large numbers at the Furnace for the final home game.
With a solid core in place and targeted reinforcements on the horizon, Jamshedpur FC will now look to build on this season’s positives and mount a stronger challenge in the campaign ahead.
